About Me

A picture of Dr. Vinoo Alluri

I am Dr. Vinoo Alluri, PhD, an Assistant Professor at the Cognitive Science Lab, IIIT-Hyderabad, India.

I studied Electronics and Communication Engineering and did my Master's degree in Music Engineering Technology at the University of Miami.

My curiosity about how music affects brain and behaviour led me to pursue a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, where my thesis was highly interdisciplinary, involving music psychology, neuroscience, statistical analysis and signal processing.

I have been working with the University of Jyväskylä, Aarhus University, University of Oslo, NIMHANS  and the National Autonomous University of Mexico on various projects.

I also worked briefly as a post-doctoral researcher at the NEAD (Neuroscience of Emotions and Affective Dynamics) lab at the University of Geneva before returning to India and taking up my current role.

I have always had a special relationship with music. I began learning how to play the piano and violin at the age of 7, which led to me performing on stage as part of the Hyderabad Chamber Orchestra as a second violinist at the age of 9.

I have also had the good fortune of performing with several orchestras at the University of Miami as well as chamber orchestras in Finland.

Apart from the joy of academic pursuits, the best part of my work is the conversations over food and drinks with colleagues from all over the world. The word 'companion' originally was used to describe someone you break bread with. That indeed is a much better definition as they really do indeed become family!
